a week long dive into wild clay and ancestral fire
Autumn equinox session: Thursday 19th September - Thursday 26th September
Earth Magic is an immersion into ancestral clay practice from beginning to end.
From wild clay to wood-firing, we will explore ancestral methods, not just as a way of creating work, but as a tool for creative transformation and personal connection to a more natural, ancient way of making and thinking.
Guided by traditional techniques and local materials we will explore and approach to ceramics that will help you connect with the natural world and your own heritage.
Suitable for all levels here is a little of what you can hope to explore throughout our time together..
Wild Clay - you will learn how to look for, collect and process your own clay as well as develop your own way of working with wild clay relative to your own background and geographic location.
Ancestral Pottery traditional ways of preparing clay and hand building with it, as well as finishing techniques (such as burnishing and terra sigillata ) meaning that the pieces don’t need to be glazed. I will tailor this aspect where possible to your own background.
Sacred Fire Once completed we will prepare your pieces to be fired as potters have for millennia, using ancestral wood-firing techniques handed down to me. You will learn about how to read the fire,
-Gain greater understanding of the physical and elemental processes usually masked by modern kilns.
-Fire using reclaimed wood or naturally fallen trees.
- Explore non-commercial, natural ancestral decoration techniques (such as reduction, obvara and other forms of naked raku.)
You will also receive a special guide to the processes which invites wider thought and reflection that we have prepared previously.
We will work with wild clay to create magical pieces to be wood-fired under star-filled skies.
Fire transforms and in this magical firing, we will explore the idea that it transforms us as well.
Payment in Instalments: We know these kind of experiences are big investments of time and money and are pleased to be able to offer payment in interest-free instalments.
